Chimney
Repair
One of the most misunderstood parts of a home is the chimney and what kind of maintenance
it really needs. When it comes to chimney repair, most people are in the dark about what needs to be done. On
our site we will take a closer look at the chimney and how to make sure yours is in good working
order.
The chimney is something most of us take for granted. We continue to burn things in it and
think that it needs no maintenance. The truth is just, like anything else, it needs to be cleaned and properly
maintained if you hope for it to continue to work the way it was intended. The main object of a chimney is to draw
smoke and gases away from the fire and out of your home. If these gases are not removed illness or even death is a
possibility so the chimney is really important as you can see.
The build up of creosote is one of the main issues that you will deal with. Creosote is an
oil that is emitted when woods and solids are burned and can form on the inside of your chimney. If
left uncleared the buildup eventually could ignite and cause a fire which is something that you certainly do
not want to see happen. Blockage is also something that you will want to watch out for. Debris and animals building
nests will be your biggest problems that you will deal with.
Now let us look at chimney repair and maintenance that you can do yourself. Always check
your chimney from the outside, periodically checking for cracks or gaps. If you do spot any, these must be fixed as
quickly as possible. Have plenty of carbon monoxide detectors in your home. These can be a good indicator that a
venting problem exists. Most of the time you will be able to trace it back to your chimney.
Try to keep fire burning in your fireplace hot as it will help ease the buildup of
creosote which can be a problem. Have your chimney looked at once a year and cleaned as well to prevent any
problems arising. If you use the fireplace often this may need to be done more often depending on use. With regular
care and maintenance your chimney repair bill should be very low. If you do let it go though, those costs to fix
your chimney can add up very quickly.
On our site, you will find many informative articles about chimney repair that will
hopefully help you with your chimney fixing endeavours.
